Our beloved President, Bill Clinton, has one big problem ( okay, maybe more than one ). He just can't seem to tell the truth! If you want some more insight into this, there are quite a few books for sale on the subject. " Boy Clinton " and " The Dysfunctional President ", to name a couple of them. This problem Clinton has with the truth, manifests itself in a number of ways.
First, he will lie about something to get what he wants.
He seems to think that promises are things to be broken and not kept. He wanted to be President in 1992, so he lied to the electorate ( us ) about: dodging the draft, a long standing sexual affair with Gennifer Flowers, smoking marijuana, etc. After he got elected, he lied to foreign heads of state to get what he wanted ( positive media photo opportunities and phoney peace treaty deals ). See Netanyahu Clintonized? ( 10-30-98 ) for a great example. Another example of this maddening tactic of speaking out of both sides of his mouth, in order to get what he wants, was in the Omnibus Budget Agreement for this year. See Short term memory loss? ( 10-18-98 ) for the details. I am at a total loss, as to how anyone can negotiate with a serial liar?
Second, he will do something wrong, and then lie to cover it up.
From Monica Lewinsky to turning the Whitehouse into his own cash cow; he just refuses to admit his wrong doings. Who could possibly forget the convincing way Clinton looked straight into the camera, wagged his finger at the viewing public and directly lied about his sexual affair with " that woman, Miss Lewinsky "! To this day, he continues to deceive the American people about his false testimony in court and refuses to admitt he lied. See Sour Grapes. ( 8-29-98 ) for some more chances he had back in August to finally come clean. How about the way he lied to us back in August about ' declaring a war on terrorism ', in the person of Osama bin Laden, and engaged in some fakery through phoney attacks on supposed terrorist targets. These attacks were wrong; see Beat The Dog. ( 8-22-98 ) for his rationalization ( lies ). When you are caught with your hand in the cookie jar, it is tough to come up a believable set of lies!
Third, he will say one thing, while doing exactly the opposite.
Remember Clinton's State of The Union address? This was when he pledged to get tough on Iraq and support the continuing UNSCOM weapons inspections. If Scott Ritter can be believed ( he seemed quite sincere to me ), Clinton was saying one thing, while doing another. Ritter said, that same week the Whitehouse cancelled his team's tough inspections of discovery. See: Unsafe at UNSCOM. ( 9-4-98 ) , for the full story. How about his August 17th speech after his Grand Jury appearence; it has been characterized as an apology. This was no apology, or it was an attack hidden within words only slightly resembling an apology. See Unsafe at any speed. ( 8-18-98 ) for some details. A more recent example of this history of lies, was right after the impeachment vote in the House of Representitives. Instead of showing any remorse at the actions of the House, he throws a party. At this party, he makes a speech in which he pleads for ' the politics of personal destruction to end '. Sadly, while he publically made this plea, his vicious Whitehouse media spin machine was busy digging up more sex related dirt on Republicans and engaging in increased media attacks on his enemies. See Clinton Throws Impeachment Party? ( 12-21-98 ) , for more. To be safe, just listen to what he says, and assume the opposite will be done!
It's a pretty sorry state of affairs, to have someone like this as our President ( and I use this term lightly ).
