I have addressed the original story and the CNN retraction of same in Is it really safe in here ? with these two opinion/articles Not Safe At CNN ( 7-3-98 ) and A Little Less Dangerous At CNN? ( 7-21-98 ) .
On a recent interview program, April Oliver was asked why she didn't contact the government about the story before they aired it. She used the excuse that the government wouldn't uncover her ( flawed fictional ) story because they would have to admitt they had operations in Laos. Ofcourse, she believed they would not admitt it. She was wrong!
Oliver must know the difference between tear gas and nerve gas ( after all her supposed research ), but is purposely missleading the public by equating the two as the same. I have watched the story and many of her interviews, but she continues to interchange the two in deference to the facts! She continues to equate the AVAILABILITY of nerve gas and its actual USE. Is this truely what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they drafted the First Amendment? After all, these two didn't say, " in our opinion this may have happened "; or " we have evidence to suggest this may have occured and her it is ". They report their wild accusations and lunatic theories as facts etched in stone ( and continue to do so ).
Oliver continues to drool the same 60s left wing radical anti-war rhetoric that I remember coming from the student radicals of the anti-Vietnam war rallies. Has she spent too much time with Hanoi Jane? This kind of crazy bullshit does not help the country to move on to the 21st CENTURY, with our eyes to the future. This radical Weatherman, SLA, Chicago 7, Unabomber, far left wing pack of lies and half truths, is only interesting to the government haters who sit around their living rooms filling their noses with cocaine! I thought this audience had grown up and realized they were only a radical fringe of the population?
Smith is not as outwordly evasive and offensive as Oliver, but his blind defense of this fiction is dispictable.
Oliver may be more suited for doing a story on "Tailhook" rather than "Tailwind" !
These crazies are an insult to our legimate First Amendment Constituional Rights!
