Last month, President Bill Clinton pinned a pile of medals on three ex-POW's chests for their heroic actions in being captured by the enemy in Yugoslavia. See: Purple Nose? Purple Lip? Oh, Purple Heart. ( 5-7-99 ) to reveiw the details.
Today, June 28th, it is being reported that another soldier on duty in Kosovo may be eligible?
In a southern section of Kosovo, where American forces are employed as peacekeepers, a Marine was slightly injured after unidentified assailant(s) shot at him Sunday. Reportedly, a bullet missed him and hit a near-by wall, chipping off a small fragment that struck the him in the cheek causing a terrible, tiny yet gaping, bleeding pin-hole. Oh no, that has got to hurt...maybe even worse than bumping your head while trying to get out of a Bradley, holding your helmet in your hand instead of putting it on your head ( and messing up the perfect mousse-job on your hair, you applied for the benefit of the large collection of photo-journalists arriving in Kosovo, daily? ).
Major Ed Loomis, from the United States Military European Command Headquarters, still in Stuttgart, reportedly clarified, " It took a Band-Aid to patch the guy up; this was not a serious injury ". The name of the Marine was with held, pending possible complications from secondary infection?
The way the President hands out medals these days, I assumed that a band-aid would equal a highly publicized Purple Heart award. Oh, but if the soldier had just been " wounded " while Bill and Hillary were there in the Balkans last week? I don't know, maybe the Marine would have refused it anyhow!
I don't mean or intend to mock the military in any way. I want to make sure, no soldier in any of our courageous branches of the armed forces, thinks this is a slam on them personally. It is only designed to jog people's memories, in not forgetting the hypocrisy of our precious campaigner-in-chief creating a self-serving media circus event out of the release of those three prisoners!
