In the winter, Northern Ireland was the object of some dog wagging. In the spring, an aspirin factory in Sudan and some tents in Afganistan, were the targets ( oh, was it articulated as Ossama Bin Laden and a phoney war on terrorism? ). In the late summer/fall it was ( and possibly still is ) Israel's turn to pay the price of media photo opportunity production. Off and on, Bosnia and Iraq have been the objects of some choreographed events ( like Clinton saying he was getting tough on Iraq publically, while the Whitehouse privately cancelled UNSCOM weapons inspections ). This is really sick stuff. If you have any doubts about it, ask yourself this question. If Clinton was really getting tough on terrorists and opening a war on terrorism, why haven't we heard anything substantial about it since the middle of August?
Where will the choreographed media photo opportunity dog lay it's next load or lift it's leg?
PALESTINE? With accelerating violence by Palestinians causing Israel to suspend all implimentation of the much heralded Wye accords, Clinton is still slated to go to Gaza. Will he leave a meeting with Arafat and the Palestinian National Council revoking the clauses in the PLO charter calling for the destruction of Israel, without an official vote? Israel has said that it will only consider a real vote as binding, and not just a voice announcement ( a vote taken by show of hands and not just an announcement by acclamation ). Is the President going to ask how many PLN or PLO members are also members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad? They aren't going to change their charters, on the destruction of Israel! I bet Clinton announces victory either way. We shall see. Remember how much the left-wing media touted the Wye accords, and how short lived they seem to be. The peace process actually is only stalled. Hopefully it will somehow continue, without sacrificing any more innocent Israeli blood.
LEBANON? With Israeli jets flying low over the occupied terriory, sonic booming neighborhoods in a show of force, Hezbollah increases attacks on Israelis. Will Clinton see this as a fresh area, to start something he can declare as a victory before it is complete? He hasn't tried the old Clinton magic on the Golan Heights and Syria, yet!
IRAQ? Will Saddam Hussein be the next target of ( media photo ) opportunity? Iraq has thumbed it's nose at Clinton and the United Nations. It has refused to turn over sensitive documents and to grant UNSCOM access to an office of the Baath party in Baghdad. Reportedly, the United States and Britain have offered up some more harsh rhetoric to Iraq. Sorry, words don't cut it, anymore. This would be the most obvious choice, for where Clinton should let Buddy lift his leg!
NORTHERN IRELAND? While David Trimble and John Hume accept the Nobel Peace prize in Oslo, Norway, the situation in Northern Ireland is much in doubt. Trimble said, " It may seem strange that we receive the reward of a race run while the race is still not quite finished ". Didn't the Nobel go to politicians negotiating an Irish peace twenty years ago? The Irish Republican Army has not laid down it's arms, and the political problems of a new Irish government are far from decided. This one could also offer up some great opportunities for dog wagging!
KOSOVO? Serb police blocked Finnish experts from digging up a suspected mass grave in Kosovo. It is quite obvious that they are stopping them from getting to the truth of the vile genocide of the Serb regime and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. As an aside, Anto Furundzija was found guilty of failing to stop the rape of a civilian and then taking no action against the rapist, at the Hague, in the Yugoslav war crimes trials. Clinton could really score some media points here, and perhaps do something for real!
CHINA? Clinton could publicly get tough on Hughes for transfering sensitive missile technology to China, though he seems to be complicant in allowing it to happen. It is being reported today, the Pentagon says Hughes gave China useful ' information on improving rockets while regulators with the U.S. Commerce Department did nothing to prevent the flow of sensitive information to Beijing '. Clinton could try to divert attention on his administration's part in this fiasco, by issuing some harsh rhetoric to China or Hughes. A great portion of the American public would undoubtedly fall for this charade!
NORTH KOREA? This one could be tough, as he bribed them before.
IRAN? This area is not as popular as it used to be.
Did I miss any? Why does Clinton seem so good at starting negotiations that go unfinished?
