Who's on trial?

In the Senate impeachment trial of Bill Clinton, the Senate Democrats may be the real defendants?

As the House managers begin their opening statements in the Senate trial on the possible removal of the President, my pre-trial thoughts lead toward the partisanship of the Senators themselves. Many of the Senators have tipped their hands as to which way they intend to vote, before the proceedings have even begun. Sadly, these blatantly partisan, oath of impartiality disregarding, Senators are all of the Democrat persuasion.

The Republicans have, to the last Senator, been completely non-partisan and non-judgemental. They have gone very far out of their way to be fair ( so much further than any Democrat majority would have ). They have held back any negative feelings or rhetoric, and offered up only objective criticism on procedural matters. Senator Orrin Hatch repeatedly held out an olive branch to Clinton, before the President lied to the Grand Jury, and he continued to do so right up until the House voted the two articles of impeachment to be sent to the Senate. Senator Fred Thompson could easily have attacked the person of the President, after being viciously attacked himself by the Whitehouse lying steamroller spin machine, during his chairmanship of the committee looking into campaign finance abuses last year; but he didn't. The Republican Senators do seem to be looking to carefully examine the evidence of possible impeachable conduct by Bill Clinton.

The Democrats in the Senate are a different story. There seems to be one impartial Democrat Senator, Robert Byrd, but he may just be bucking for this year's OSCAR? Senators Charles Schumer and Barbara Boxer have openly declared that they will vote not to remove their precious first philanderer, before the trial even starts. Sadly, this is standard operating procedure for Democrats and it is no surprise to anyone. Why can't they just admitt that they are going to vote to let Clinton off the hook because he is their holy DNC fearless leader? Clinton has raised more money than any other President in history, and a pile of it went to Boxer and Schumer directly last year. Isn't declaring their vote before proceedings have even commenced, a violation of that additional oath of impartiality that they all took? When will the Democrats finally quit looking like a pack of trained animals? The Democrat Senators do seem to be looking for any excuse to let Bill Clinton off the hook.

I will be keeping a sharp eye on the Senators, to see how and why they vote whatever way they do. This trial will show us all whether the next millenium will be ushered in with a tyranny of Whitehouse/DNC partisanship or personal integrity and upholding the Constitution!
