Utilize The Internet?

Is the Internet destined to become the next UTILITY?

Interesting concept, huh? Like your electricity, gas, water and telephone; your internet connection may become the newest government controlled utility. This way, our wonderful Washington legislators can tell us what may or may not be included on websites based in the United States, and/or pass some kind of surtax to be added to your monthly dial-up connection bill. Intelligence agencies, like the FBI, may then be able to track where individual users spend their time on the Internet. Scary thoughts!

Silly notion, you may say. Maybe not so un-imaginable. With the rising costs of government and calls to keep the budget balanced, how could the boys in DC resist a new source of possible income? Most Democrats have never met a new tax that they didn't like, and with the slim Republican majority in the House of Representitives, only a few moderates would have to go along with the liberals, to pass this ' horror show ' of a tax!

On the flip side, most conservatives would love to regulate what you can publish on the Internet in the name of decency. Again, with the slim Republican majority in the House, only a few liberals would have to go along with the conservatives to pass an infringement on our ' international ' right of free speech!

As you can see, there are motivations on both sides of the political coin for federalizing the internet and turning it into the newest utility. Is it greed, or is it censorship? Only the future will tell, or you decide.
