*February 8, 1999 Day Fifteen ( 16? ). Closing arguements for the House Managers and Whitehouse Counsels conclude.*
The day starts with the leader of the extreme Senate Democrat partisan clown act, Tom Harkin, vomitting that the charge of obstruction of justice is dead after seeing Monica Lewinsky's testimony, to the media interviewers? I guess Monica was the one who coached Betty Currie in the Whitehouse? Yeah, that must be it. This Harkin is a real piece of DNC work. John Kerrey also went before the television cameras and declared that there was nothing anyone could say or do to change his votes to let Clinton off the hook. Most disturbing, he hinted that the acquittal of Clinton was somehow linked to the conduct of the House Republicans and not the offenses committed by the first philander. He said in essense, " It might have been different if the House Republicans had brought the House Democrats into the process "? This is sick, man. This guy took an oath of impartiality and he is basing his decision at least partially on how Republicans acted? Shame on the Senate Democrats for being just as partisan and just as well trained as their House of Representitive counterparts! These two guys must have been in the clan of the presidential defenders, who Robert Byrd was referring to, when he said, " Whom do they think they are fooling? "
The real action started with the House Managers offering their closing words to the Senate. George Sensenbrenner said the House Managers motives were altruistic and not political. Christopher Cannon thanked the Senators for their attention. He noted the spinning and gloating by the Whitehouse minions in the media, not being bound by an oath to tell the truth. George Gekas thanked the Chief Justice and showed how Clinton engaged in a pattern of lies, starting with his submission of written answers to questions from the Paula Jones lawyers on December 23, 1997. Steve Chabot reinterated the proven elements of the perjury article and exclaimed how he voted for Jimmy Carter. Bob Barr debunked the various Whitehouse straw man defenses as irrelevant. He urgerd the Senators to abide by their oaths of impartiality. Finally, Steve Buyer argued for a finding of fact. He invoked the Democrat's fairness arguement as not being for acquittal but conviction, and used the example of Doctor Barbara Battalino.
After a short break, the President's defenders began their final day of closing arguements. Charles Ruff started with a series of disgraceful personal attacks on the House Managers, " wanting to win too much ". Shifting back and forth from ' this does not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors ' to ' look ma no hands ', Ruff only made a few rudimentary points. Sadly but not untruely, " Jabba The Ruff " has sold out any integrity he may have had left, in the name of lying on international television for his holy head of ( our ) state! He characterized the case for impeachment presented by the Managers as a " moving target " or an " empty pot ". He played some very creatively editted video tape excerpts, actually cut off testimony in mid sentence? I guess these lawyers are not under oath, because I am just flabbergasted at the way Ruff plays fast and loose with testimony and the truth. He made a transparently phoney attempt to debunk Asa Hutchinson's " seven pillars " of obstruction of justice, but he only managed to make himself look silly on many of these, as he attempted to brush off the facts as inconsequential instead of inaccurate? The only " facts " Ruff seems to care about, are ( is ) actually the Whitehouse talking points " fax " memo. I think Ruff actually believes his own fiction, but maybe it is he who has been watching too many episodes of the X-Files, himself? Ruff invoked the ' so what - look ma no hands ' defense again, and finally talked about " empty rhetoric ", he must have been talking to ( about ) himself. He ended with an absolutely incredible unethical direct attack of the House Managers individually, using each of their names and hurling an insult or satirical phrase their way. I have never seen such in the gutter tactics in all my life!
Manager Bill McCollum began the final rebuttal period for the House presenters of the prosecution. He provided exact three un-rebutted quotes from the Grand Jury where Bill Clinton committed perjury. Charles Canady presented that the President damaged the Constitution and not the House Managers. Ed Bryant talked about Clinton lying and helping Monica Lewinsky file a false affidavitt. Asa Hutchinson addressed the issues that Ruff called pillars and showed how Ruff ignored or changed the facts, twisting them to meet the contrived defense of the day, from the Whitehouse. He ended with, " Let justice roll down like mighty waters ". James Rogan began with how difficult it was to prosecute Clinton because he used to be a Democrat ( and he met Bill Clinton as a student ). He said the House Managers jettisoned the spin and gave them the unvarnished truth, " No oath, no presidency ". He said, Clinton " hopes the polls will be governing the Senate "! Lindsey Graham brought up character and said, " If we brought the Founding Fathers back here they would say, ' what's a poll?' ". Graham continued, " If you think he is a victim, you outta' acquitt him...if you believe he lied, you should convict him ". He concluded with a warning, "...this nation is in hopeless decline... " Henry Hyde has an emotional close on cynicism, finishing the House Manager's presentation with, " LET RIGHT BE DONE ".
The gloating and lying, out of the Democrats in Congress and this Whitehouse, from it's lawyers to it's media minions, has sickened me and disgraced our country to the bone! You may disagree with the Republicans, but they are not lying and attacking the messengers of the Whitehouse ( unethical? ) defense.
