*January 26, 1999 Day Ten ( 11 ). A motion for witnesses is considered?*
The Senate crawls out from under the rock it was hiding under, like so many worms. The public will little know nor long remember what went on in there. The closed Senate impeachment proceedings are completely closed to the eyes of the people both during and after they conclude, with Senators risking expulsion if they reveal the details of debate. This is different than other normal Senate closed proceedings, where the transcripts are made available afterwards. This is an important distinction, and I hope they make future deliberations open to the public by a vote today!
Motion to dismiss, what's that? Amidst the reports that convicted criminal Webster Hubbell will indeed have to stand trial for multiple counts of tax evasion stemming from payments for his silence in the Whitewater affair because an appeal has been upheld, the Senate Impeachment Court will hear a motion for witnesses and additional evidence by the House Managers.
Bill McCollum described the witness list; a short one, with these three: Monica Lewinsky, Vernon Jordan and Sidney Blumenthall on it. McCollum continued, describing the additional evidence they want included in the trial. This evidence is quite astounding. The first element is an affidavit by Barry Ward, a judge clerk who witnessed Bill Clinton affirming the false affidavit of Monica Lewinsky in the Paula Jones deposition. The second is a copy of the subpoena for Betty Currie by Paula Jones attorney Wesley Holmes, it cites the reason for calling her as Bill Clinton's repeated mention of her in the deposition! Lastly, a telephone record of an hour long telephone conversation between Jordan and Clinton that took place while Monica Lewinsky was in Vernon Jordan's office on December 6th.
Of most note was the conduct of Democrat Senator Patrick " Lapdog " Leahy. Leahy, carrying the Clinton/Whitehouse/DNC water bucket with nary a lost drip, objected to the entrance of this new damning evidence before McCollum finished his description. Chief Justice Rehnquist overruled this objection, but Leahy's extreme DNC obedience dog training was absolutely clear to everyone!
House Managers Ed Bryant and Asa Hutchinson finished the morning presentation on why Monica Lewinsky and Vernon Jordan should be called as witnesses. James Rogan will finish the initial offering by House Managers with why Sidney Blumenthall should be called to illustrate and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, the obstruction of justice charge. Rogan's presentation became so strong, at one point that MSNBC shifted it's coverage to Airforce One landing at St. Louis!
David " Darth Vader " Kendall continued his boring and abusive languaged campaign of blatant and direct lies to the Senate and the American people with more incredible falsehoods and attacks on Ken Starr. He again misrepresented Sam Dash and why he resigned from the OIC! Hasn't anyone told him that particular lie is way too obvious and been tried before? Doesn't he risk disbarment for these calculated direct lies? He claimed he was not going to address the need for witnesses but only the question of additional evidence; and then launched into a litany about why no witnesses were needed ( no fooling, he really did that? )! He attacked the House Managers collectively as " partisan Republicans " and personally through quoting Chris Cannon from a month's old television show from 1998. Kendall has really shown himself to be the king of taking quotes out of context and using them for the illustration of his own lies! He continued for what seemed to be an eternity, quoting media appearence after media appearence by players in the proceedings, finally illiciting an objection from a Republican Senator. This objection was overruled and the useless parade of unsworn quotes continued for over half an hour! The shamelessness of these arrogant Clinton-dictatorship defenders is beyond belief. Our country is destined to go the way of ancient Rome, if we continue to let the lying antics of so-called attornies like this to go unpunished. I guess that is what this impeachment trial is all about, letting rich fatcats get away with lying through their teeth in court and violating the rights ( in court or otherwise ) of the poor common folk. Any arguement that Clinton is concerned about the rights of the common people, have been completely erased by the antics of the President's lawyers ( and the decadent ultra rich Hollywood entertainment industry supporters )!
In their rebuttal phase, the House Managers exposed Kendall's quoting out of context as the attempts to mislead that they were. " You can't have it both ways ", said Rogan. Henry Hyde closed with the illustration that the President's defense has not been on the facts, and that is why they don't want witnesses!
They Senate then went into closed session to debate the issue. This and the motion to dismiss, will be voted on Wednesday January 27th.
