At your next cocktail party, raise your martini glass high and offer up a toast to Leon Trotsky!
Are you one of those extreme left wing socialist Democrats who really wishes Hillarycare, with special crony/guest FOB&H, Ira Magaziner, had become the law of the land? Do you further wish that Mrs. I-took-Arkansas-from-48th-to-50th-in-educational-standards, had been allowed to revamp the nation's educational system in the image of Little Rock? Do you worship Karl Marx and wish we could pattern America's transportation and utilities after the failed Soviet Union ( CCCP ) model, or adopt the ones being used in Canada, England, France and Italy, right now?
If you have answered yes to any of the above questions; you may want to push the back button on your browser and/or read no further!
Not to dwell too much on the political science lesson, the basics are this: in socialism, the major services, like power, telephone, transportation, education and health care are run by the central government ( sound like anyone we all know? ) and with communism, we add all private businesses as well. These two governmental models have been shown in the twentieth century not to work very well; hence the fall of the Berlin Wall and the atrocious health care in France and the late running trains in Italy ( since they strung up Mussolini's body? ).
Besides just the common sense of experience, telling you that a bureaucrat from Washington D.C. is not the one who you want dictating your health care needs; if you want to know why the socialist or communist model doesn't work, just ask any actual Russian physician you may know, who moved here before we won the Cold War. In this abomination of a health care model, treatments and operations are doled out by paper-pushers on a first come, first serve basis; with a liberal dose of potential bribery and favoritism problems, associated with that system. If you further don't believe me, that there will be preferential treatment for the rich and politically connected; ask someone from those three aforementioned European countries about their waiting lists for operations and/or look to Canada, as the rich folks from up there come to the USA to have serious operations without the wait ( or the potential of death while waiting )!
As the year 2000 elections grow nearer and the Democrat anxiety jumps exponentially, you will be hearing the far lefties crowing their sad songs of how inferior our educational system has become, and that we need more government entitlements to fix it ( remember the bucks go straight out of the US taxpayer's pockets into the pockets of the political appointees managing the one size fits all program ). The problem with this, is that Washington has been throwing money at the problem, even creating an Executive Branch, Department of Education ( a real black hole for graft, corruption and extreme left wing socialist behavior ), for more than a few years now and it has only made matters worse. Another problem is the one size fits all nature of federal programs does not lend itself to easily solve problems in both Montana and New York City with the same paint brush. No Hillary, it does not take a village!
There are the beginnings of governmental control in both the power ( Department of Energy ) and transportation ( Department of Transportation ) service sectors, but not total governmental control. That total control could be right around the millennial corner. The Department of Energy was created by Jimmy Carter ( yes, that is over two decades ago ) when the Iran crisis and other factors first drove gasoline prices at the pump substantially over a dollar per gallon and created real gas rationing ( remember odd and even license plate automobile lines? ). This Department has managed to hang around way past it's usefulness, sucking up taxpayer funds as fast as Secretaries like Hazel O'Leary could put jet fuel into her globe-trotting, donation receiving, formation of official jet aircraft; grasping control over even our nuclear labs ( the dire consequences of which we are only just now beginning to get the main details of ). The Department of Transportation became another poltical cash cow for the unethical Democrats, with Ron Brown filling DNC coffers full of tax deductable charitable donations? Think about how much money an unscrupulous politician could make off selling the political appointments in a nationally run train system. Sounds kind of like taking bids on the parking meter contracts in Little Rock or the control tower concessions at Mena Airport, huh?
As for your telephone, hold on to your ISP hat, as I smell a tax or making the internet a " utility "!
Socialize...socialize; make government like a unisex expanding garment, of one size?
