Sherman began with a rather objective history lesson including the ethnic cleansing and massacre of Serbs at the hands of Croatians and Albanians. To his credit, he did touch an area which seemed to be taboo to many others, both Democrat and Republican. He even vocalized the nature of the ethnic cleansing of eight hundred thousand Serbs from Croatia in the Bosnian War connected tragedy. This was it for even a hint of agreement with me...
He thinks the honor of the American eagle is at stake and he was willing to flap his hawkish Democrat wings ( or hold his breath ) until we recover it for the President. He thought, " we should be increasing our objectives " but he doubted we could ever see a " multi-ethnic Kosovo living in harmony ". He continued to describe the Clinton White House in a less than farvorable light and that " the administration is welded to it's existing policy ".
Astonishingly, he recognized the importance of Russia and was willing to publically express it, though for the wrong reason ( ofcourse ). He thought " Russia is critical because they can provide a fig leaf for cover politically " for Slobodan Milosevic. But this is so he can surrender to us with some form of honor, and not be taken away to the Hague, in exchange for the majority of the Serbian Kosovo province. He cited the fact that Serbia is a tiny little country, but Russia is larger and has nuclear weapons. He correctly opined " If we do not treat Russia with respect now, they will remember it " in the future.
He then described an interesting plan where Kosovo is partitioned into twenty percent Serb and eighty precent Albanian, with some Serb religious sites included within their piece of the pie. I don't think Slobo wants to give away anything, but Sherman thought this plan would " leave them ( the Serbs ) with something to bargain with ".
Then it took a left ( wing liberal Democrat ) turn. The partition for the Serbs would be patrolled by the Russians and the Albanian area would be policed by NATO. That could be one of those ' over my dead body ' kind of situations for Milosevic. He thought we should give the portion of Kosovo under NATO's protection all the old Yugoslavian contracts that the U.S. government could award. This shameless tactic would obviously be designed to punish the Serbian territory.
It only got worse, as he described the U.S. troops in Albania training an " Albanian army using American heavy weapons " to liberate Kosovo. He earlier admitted the KLA ( Kosovo Liberation Army ) was a serious terrorist organization, allied with the likes of Ossama Bin Laden, drug dealers and Iran based Muslim groups, but they had their place riding in with the tanks, though " lightly armed "? He finished with a typically Democrat explanation of how if they only trained the Albanians and didn't give them posession of the heavy weapons, that it wouldn't violate international law. Parsing foreign policy?
It was amazing how much this liberal Democrat was willing to admit about the Albanian inspired atrocities, but it still boiled down to his complicity in using the Kosovo situation to help rehabilitate Clinton's tarnished image or future place in the history books.
