Amidst reports that the New York Blood Center had possibly shipped AIDS tainted blood to Chicago, Memphis, New York and Pittsburgh hospitals from 1994 to 1996 through improperly tested blood donations ( HIV and hepatitis ), over one hundred demonstrators marking World AIDS Day, marched near the New York City Hall.
Not to miss a chance to get some international media exposure, Sharon Stone spoke at a forum at UN headquarters on Tuesday marking World AIDS Day. This seems mighty strange to me. Isn't having the star of the movie, " Basic Instinct ", talk about AIDS and AIDS prevention, sort of like having Woody Harrelson of the movie, " Natural Born Killers " talk about gun control? What qualifications does playing a sexual sicko, give Stone to expouse advice on the AIDS problem? I guess, being an ultra left wing Hollywood type, with all the decadent sexual inuendos associated with the corner of Hollywood and Vine, gives her the right to speak out.
Well, she didn't disappoint the audience listening to her. She quoted statistics that in 1998, three million young people worldwide were infected with the AIDS virus. She didn't preach any form of abstinence, but she came up with a rather novel idea for parents to help protect their kids.
" I mean, put 200 condoms in a box in some place in the house where everybody isn't all the time, so that your kids can take them. If they want to make water balloons out of them, great. If they want to carry them so they feel tough, great. If they want to give them to their friends, even better."
Keeping condoms in the house for kids? Obviously, getting your teenage children to practice safe sex is a terrific idea, it just may save their lives. But, making water balloons out of them or carrying them to feel tough, is an irresponsible lightening of the problem and trivializing sexual promiscuity. Condoms are not toys. Won't this encourage younger kids to play with them as such?
I believe that the condom is a tool in preventing pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted disease. It should not be viewed as a license for children to begin having sexual intercourse at a younger age! The morality of love and faithfulness should be taught to the nation's teenagers, not sexual promiscuity as long as they use a condom ( they have been know to fail from time to time )!
It is being reported that Stone also said parents should 'accept the power of sex ' among teenagers and protect children from AIDS in a safe and non-judgemental way. Just like a Hollywood liberal, she seems to ignore the parental right to teach their kids a system of morality and/or responsibility.
Her message, though not as bad as the message sent by President Bill Clinton having unprotected oral sex with Monica Lewinsky, may actually contribute to the rise of teenage sex!
