Well, Air Force colonel Eileen Collins, commanding the space shuttle Columbia, will probably not be suffering the same case of too much eye shadow that Zsa Zsa Gabor and the movie-going audience had to endure, in the movie which bears the same title as this article. Collins, is taking her place in the history books as the first American female commander of a mission to outer space, on board the space shuttle.
The forty-two year old Collins has flown on two previous shuttle missions, as the pilot. If the tentative date for blast-off, July 20th, comes off without a hitch, she will be responsible for placing into orbit, a NASA project that was delayed from last summer. This project is NASA's Chandra X-ray telescope; and as of today, it has not been cleared for launch.
While not like Alan Sheppard's first American in space Mercury flight, I look forward to the launch of Columbia, led by Colonel Eileen Collins.
