Supposedly, yesterday an agreement was reached on the omnibus national budget. As of today, October 16th, there is nothing to indicate that it won't be passed and signed this week. Both parties held brief press conferences, to announce the " bi-partisan " agreement; they were quite different in nature!
The Republicans were happy, and respectfully bi-partisan. This was not the case with the Democrats, who just couldn't be as friendly and act non-partisan, for a change ( I guess they are just too darn scared about their party's tarnished image, to not try to score every possible political point ).
Trent Lott (R) said of the agreement, " ( the budget agreement )...was not a question of who won or who lost, but what is best for the American people ".
Tom Daschle (D) said that the President and the Vice President, passed the budget over the Republicans, with the fear of the veto pen. He also directly attacked the Republican as " atrocious ", and loudly declared, " we won ".
How's that for two completely different ways to celebrate? From the Senate party leaders, we go to the House leadership.
Richard Gephardt (D) says,"...the President takes full credit...". Newt Gingrich (R), offered up thanks to Erkskine Bowles. Fairly obvious who is being partisan, and who isn't.
Al Gore was really boring, as he announced their almighty liar-and-chief; and Bill Clinton didn't disappoint them. The President did offer up some fake thanks to the Republicans, before he launched into a series of cheap shots. ' The Republicans were against everything, but we passed it '; and ' we did in eight days, what they couldn't do in eight months '; were a couple of the better Clinton gems. Does he really think anyone with half a brain, swallows this kind of crap? Man, this guy is definately running scared.
I think Clinton spent the budget surplus money on education programs, instead of saving Social Security ( just more exposed Clinton lies ). I also think that the Republicans caved in, when they passed IMF funding ( even as Dick Armey (R) said, " the IMF will no longer work in secret " ). I think it is reprehensible, though easily predictable, that the Democrats had to attempt to make political giggle points, out of their portion of the announcement and press conference.
