He who hesitates, is lost.

Kosovo waited too long to seek autonomy.

First, a little history lesson. The post World War II Federation of Yugoslav Republics consisted of 6 independant autonomous regions: Slovenia, Croatia ( Hrvatska ), Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia, Montenegro ( Crna Gora ), and Macedonia. Serbia had two non-autonomous but incorporated regions, one to the north and one to the south; Vojvodina and Kosovo. Vojvodina is to the north and populated by Hungarians. Kosovo is the southern region and was populated by 95 percent Muslim Albanians. Both received many refugees from the two associated parent countries, as they fled the tyranny of the CCCP.

Pristina, the capitol of Kosovo, had it's own government and universities; the whole of Kosovo being populated by Albanian speaking individuals ( 95 percent ). They were quite happy to exist as part of Serbia, while being able to keep their own language, educational system, and representitives.

With the fall of the CCCP, came cries of independance from the 6 Yugoslav Republics; the capitol of Yugoslavia was actually in Serbia, Belgrade. Most folks know that in the last few years, fighting broke out between many of them. Vojvodina and Kosovo remained silent. They should have spoken up at the beginning!

Serbia has since sent it's own officials to take over the Albanian speaking region of Kosovo. Gone are the universities and infrastrucutre, that speak the native language. Sadly, soon Kosovo with either become part of Serbia, or a mass cemetary!

I believe, that the people from Kosovo missed their chance at autonomy, by not speaking up while the world was watching the fighting between the other larger regions! The 4 million residents of Kosovo have my pity.
