This measure is a simple reaffirmation of our security committment to the peaceful people of Taiwan. Over the years since the original security act was passed in 1979 and a clarification measure and written note from Ronald Reagan in 1982, our relationship with the democratic government and commercial interests in Taiwan have gotten closer. In this time of the Clinton/DNC/Whitehouse conspiracy of rampant quid pro quos with the totalitarian communist dictatorship in the People's Republic of China on the mainland, it is quite sad that the Congress feels that they must put more support of Taiwan in obvious written form to stop the Clinton dictatorship from selling the island democracy down the river for it's own selfish needs. The bill has gotten wide support, even from some Democrats, though in typical liberal style many of them are talking out of both sides of their mouths!
Cal Dooley ( D ) was against the measure and spouted the White House talking points fax memo mantra of, " The policy of economic engagement is the way to advance democracy in China ". Isn't this just so typical of socialist leaning Democrats?
Dana Rohrabacher ( R ) wanted to make sure the Red Chinese understand, " we stand by our committments to Taiwan...to be understood by friend and foe alike ".
Roscoe Bartlett ( R ) said, " HR 1838 reaffirms our committment...it is a necessary step...makes a firm statement that agression toward Taiwan will not be tolerated ".
Christopher Cox ( R ) began, " Today, more than in 1979, the security of Taiwan is important...a democratic Taiwan is a ( symbol ) to the people and the communist government in Beijing ". He correctly said that, " Taiwan is our seventh largest trading partner ", while Red China is not even close. He pointed out that just last week right in Washington D.C., a Red Chinese general said, " we will not renounce force " in dealing with Taiwan. He finished with, " The United States supports freedom and democracy on Taiwan...hopes in the Twenty-first Century that all Chinese will have this as their birth right "!
Sam Gejdenson ( D ) danced around this issue, though he showed his Clinton obedience training and obvious support of the one China doctrine with the usual Clinton/DNC/Whitehouse mantra of, " unity through dialog and not through force ".
The author of the bill, Tom DeLay ( R ) began to close with a declaration that we are " fully committed to Taiwan and that is the purpose for this bill ". He correctly described the present danger with, " The ( PRC ) Chinese have been saber-rattling for years...missile tests and missile build-ups ". He continued with, " The PRC refuses to renounce violence ", and this is a " gravely serious situation ". He finished with, " The Taiwanese are not asking us to send troops or bomb anyone ", and declared that we should, " support democracy and honor our committments ".
Dick Armey ( R ), House Majority Leader opined, " We have an obligation to advance the cause of freedom throughout the world ". He firmly ended with, " Make it clear that the American people will stand by Taiwan if attacked "!
I believe that the International Relations Committee passed this measure out with a vote of 39 to 3. The full House voted 341 to 70 for veto proof passage, with 200+ Republicans voting yes with a handful voting no, and 140+ Democrats voting yes but dozens of them voting no! I think the representitives who voted no should take a long look at themselves in the mirror and re-read our Declaration of Independence and Constitution with the peaceful freedom loving people of Taiwan in mind!
The only thing left to do now, is to wait and see if the People's Republic of China attacks Taiwan, if a Republican is elected to the White House!
