When you disagree with a conservative, whichever the political affiliation, you may get an arguement on the facts, or a shrug of the persons shoulders, after you fail to grasp their point. If you get a particularly staunch conservative that disagrees with you, he may attack your credibility directly, but he won't accuse you of being inherently malevolent.

Have a disagreement with most liberal Democrats and you are in for the emotional arguement of your life, including a direct attack on yourself, as being the embodiment of pure evil! They will ignore the facts on both sides of the issue and demonize you and others who hold your view. For instance:

1) Disagree on further Federal funding for public schools and you get an arguement that looks like this...

The conservative says that he doesn't want big government interfering in what he believes is the business of local government and the neighborhood families themselves. The liberal answers that you are evil and want to take books and meals away from school children.

2) Disagree on the Federal government taking over health care...

The conservative may say that he doesn't think socialized medicine is a good idea and that a Federal bureaucrat shouldn't make medical decisions for you. The liberal will answer that you are denying health care to poor innocent kids.

3) Disagree on an across the board tax cut...

The conservative will say that citizens deserve to keep more of their hard earned money. The liberal will answer that you just want tax breaks for the rich?

4) Disagree on banning very late term partial birth abortions...

The conservative may argue that the child is far enough along in term to viably survive outside the mother's uterus. The liberal may counter that you are an evil megalomaniac, who wants to control a woman's body.

5) Disagree on some new funding for an entitlement ( like welfare, for instance )...

The conservative will argue that people should not get paid for nothing and suggest a work or education program. The liberal will cry that you are talking food out of the mouths of poor children!

6) Disagree on the value of affirmative action program quotas...

The conservative will point to the Constitution, then say that all men are created equal and no one deserves preferential treatment. The liberal will call you a racist!

7) Disagree on funding a missile defense system...

The conservative will point out the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction across the globe, and the need to protect ourselves from a terrorist attack. The liberal will call you a warmonger.

I believe that conservatives are inherently more analytical and liberals more emotional. Just why the liberals always resort to emotional and personal attacks of villification, is still beyond me. Maybe, they just don't have the facts on their side, and refuse to believe that someone may have a better idea than they do?
