Hark(in); do I smell a traitor?

Senator Tom Harkin was not content to be king of the dung heap; he now wants to be king of the nuclear waste dump ( our cities )!

As the Senate debates S.257 " The National Missile Defense Act Of 1999 ", Democrat Senator Tom Harkin uses his time to express his views against protecting our country from such an attack? He is either Senator Neville Chamberlain ( if you don't remember who this 1930s British appeaser of Adolf Hitler was, ask the six million Jews that Nazi Germany killed in World War II ) number one, or American traitor number one!

This morning ( Wednesday March 17th ) Tom Harkin offered an amendment to conduct a study of threats instead of beginning a missile defense and he argued against both a national or theater based missile defense system. He said, " we are focusing too much on a ballistic missile defense. We are forgetting about other threats ". He continued that a missile shield would not protect us against a truck bomb or biological attack. He indirectly suggested that proponents of the missile defense are irrational? It is he that is being irrational, as the threats of terrorist activities like that are a completely different story. He argued that deploying such a system was against the treaties we signed with the CCCP in the past. Has he bothered to look around for the CCCP? The Soviet Union is gone! Russia, The People's Republic of China, North Korea and a rogue terrorist nation are the threats now!

Republican Senator Thad Cochran ( the author of the bill ) responded with some real logic. He said, " The Harkin amendment calls for a report on a wide variety of threats ", not the specific ballistic missile attack. " Just because we can't defend against others doesn't mean we shouldn't defend against this one ". I believe history may be watching this debate in the United States Senate with an eye on our ultimate survival as a people.

Harkin continued with an emotional, yet irrational litany comparing the proposed missile defense to France's Maginot Line ( a string of defensive bunkers built between Germany and France that were bypassed by German forces in the opening days of World War II ). This guy is a real piece of work and not exactly a true American patriot! He finally withdrew his amendment.

Sadly, another Democrat Senator, Paul Wellstone, was vocally against the missile defense and encouraged reducing nuclear weapons instead. Is this guy completely out of his mind? I know Wellstone is a true bleeding heart liberal, but now the blood will be ours and not just his! He says, " I am very concerned with our security ", on the floor of the Senate? If this was true, he would be supporting a defensive umbrella for our country against ICBMs. I guess he feels safe from the People's Republic of China in Minnesota because currently their land-based missiles don't have the range to reach there yet ( YET! ). He should ask the people living on the West Coast how they feel about it, being directly in the Red Chinese announced crosshairs. He is either Neville Chamberlain number two, or American traitor number two!

Contemptably, Democrat Dick Durbin was the next to add his voice in opposition to the bill. He echoed Harkin's flawed arguement comparing the missile defense to the Maginot Line. Shame on you Durbin, Neville Chamberlain number three or American traitor number three! He argued that MAD protects us. Do you remember MAD? It is the doctrine of " Mutual Assured Destruction "; that is, we could retaliate massively against anyone who attacks us, thus detering any attack. Well, tell this to the irradiated, smoking hole in the ground left of Los Angeles or San Francisco should the Red Chinese make good on their threats some day! Ask yourself this one too; would Bill Clinton order a nuclear retaliatory strike against anyone?

The final vote was taken and the bill passed 97 to 3; with only Democrat Senators Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy and Paul Wellstone voting no. Tom Harkin voted yes? What a hypocrite time waster! The only Democrat to vote yes while this bill was in the Armed Services Committee was Joseph Lieberman. The President changed his view from a veto threat to support just this week; after he saw how widespread the public support was for it ( typical Bill Clinton government by poll )!

If you don't think the threat to us is real, read: Confucius Say, " Kiss Your Ass Goodbye "! ( 3-10-99 ) .
