Come one, come all, to the not-so-greatest show on Earth. The House Democrats will bring you the partisan circus of the Millenium. Yes, they have side-shows, freak-shows, animal acts, a house of horrors, and ofcourse, a hall of mirrors!
The RINGMASTER. Henry Hyde only had to admonish the Democrats for a single outburst, and it was not too loud. I wonder what is to come?
SIDE SHOWS. Charles Schumer invoked the side-show issue of censure and rebuke ( not provided for in the Constitution ), and proclaimed that there is " no basis for impeachment ". I believe, both William Delahunt and Marty Meehan brought up the question to " define what is impeachable ", before any proceedings begin ( never done in any impeachment proceeding before ).
The FREAK SHOW. Maxine Waters understandably and predictably attacked Starr and the Republicans. Sheila Jackson Lee, Bobby Scott and Mel Watt joined in! Zoe Lofgren was trying to join the show.
ANIMAL ACTS. John Conyers jumped through the usual DNC and Whitehouse hoops, in his personal attacks on Newt Gingrich and Ken Starr. Barney Frank was unusually civil, in his manner.
The HOUSE OF HORRORS. Robert Wexler was screaming and foaming from the corners of his mouth, as he viciously attacked Ken Starr and even Linda Tripp!
The HALL OF MIRRORS. Tom Barrett was quietly partisan and evasive in his calculated attack on Republicans. Howard Berman was partisan, but he could have been worse! Jerrold Nadler was also trying to conceal his blatant partisanship, but was not too successful.
The Republicans were in charge of the FUNHOUSE. Sadly, the only act was by Bob Barr, with minor help from Howard Coble. Though Barr was not loud or rude, he did strongly attack the President. Howard Coble did point out the Democrat's attempts at stirring up partisan feelings, but was not rude and attacking. Coble pointed to the fair number of minority staff members ( 14-Ds and 7-Rs, as opposed to 100+Ds and 12Rs in the Watergate investigation ). Sure sounds a good deal more fair to me.
Notable quotations:
" Truthfulness is the glue that holds our justice system together. " - Bill McCollum. Bill also pointed out that 116 people are currently serving jail time for perjury.
" Truth does matter. " - Bob Inglis.
Rick Boucher, Steve Rothman, and the vast majority of Republicans tried to be non-partisan, but obviously were a bit opinionated.
